Navigating a new relationship without being able to see the other half of that relationship was near impossible. And, of course, no one had any messages that needed to be sent to the Underworld, leaving no reason for Hermes to linger down there. If the universe truly decided to favour him for once, he might actually be able to get a brief greeting and a wave to his newfound partner before duty called. If he was lucky, he’d hear the sound of Charon’s ferry pushing through the river before he had to leave again. Hermes enjoyed being busy, but he also enjoyed having enough time to himself to be able to chose how he was busy. Ares was waging wars and needing souls escorted (at such a rate that Hermes dropped them off and left again immediately), Zeus wanted messages sent and lovers hidden from Hera (again), and his siblings couldn’t be bothered to fly themselves around to give their own messages. The other Olympians were constantly wanting something from him. They were now, and it was such a recent thing that not being able to see Charon was starting to take its toll. But they hadn’t been… professional associates back then. Perhaps it was simply the timing they’d been apart from each other for longer in the past. It had been a long time since Hermes had seen Charon, longer than he would have liked, even given their many responsibilities.
